    168th Wing

EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska – An Airman deployed to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, from the 168th Wing, Alaska Air National Guard was pronounced dead Nov. 6, 2018, at Naval Hospital Guam. Capt. John Goeres, a KC-135R Stratotanker pilot, was assigned to the Alaska Air National Guard’s 168th Air Refueling Squadron.

“Capt. John Goeres was a trusted and gifted aviator, a leader who rose from the enlisted ranks to fly jets for the Alaska Air National Guard,” said Col. Bryan S. White, commander 168th Wing. “Our hearts are saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of such a fine young man. He served our state and nation with distinction and honor, and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers rest with his family, as well as all of those who served beside him.”

Goeres began his career in 2004 as an enlisted member of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 173rd Fighter Wing, Klamath Falls, Oregon. In 2012 he applied for and was selected to become a pilot with the 168th ARS.

Members of the 168th Wing are currently deployed to the 506th Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron, 36th Operations Group, Andersen AFB, Guam. Air National Guard tanker units from across the nation regularly deploy to the U.S. territory in the South Pacific in support of the continuous bomber presence and theater security packages in the region.

The cause of the death is currently under investigation, and foul play is not suspected. More details will be released as they become available. For more information contact the 168th Wing public affairs at (907) 377-8734 or email usaf.ak.168-wg.mbx.wg-public-affairs@mail.mil.
