WIESBADEN, Germany – U.S. and German Signal leaders met Nov. 6, 2018, in Wiesbaden to discuss opportunities for enhancing training, readiness and interoperability between the two allies.
The Interoperability Cooperation Group, or ICG, is composed of leaders from the U.S. Army’s 2d Theater Signal Brigade and the Bundeswehr CIS Command. The purpose of the ICG is to identify, plan and facilitate opportunities to enhance partnership and interoperability between the two allies through shared training, exercises and social activities.
U.S. Army Col. Neil Khatod, commander of 2d Theater Signal Bde., emphasized the need for greater cooperation in order enhance capabilities and to deter any potential adversary.
“These partnerships are incredibly important not only for building relationships, but also to enhance our collective training and readiness,” Khatod said.
German Army Brig. Gen. Dietmar Mosmann, Bundeswehr CIS Command deputy commanding general and commander of troops, said U.S. and German Soldiers are already training and fighting together in Germany and elsewhere, and stressed the importance of having strong working relationships.
“If you do these things together before you must in operations, it will work a lot more smoothly than if we didn’t do it,” Mosmann said.
Khatod and Mosmann agreed to find more opportunities to incorporate each other’s Soldiers into upcoming training exercises. Following the ICG meeting the two leaders signed a cooperation agreement to continue the ICG and the partnership between the two units.
Some 2d Theater Signal Bde. units already have formal partnerships with Bundeswehr CIS Command units: The 102d Strategic Signal Battalion in Wiesbaden is partnered with the Bundeswehr 282nd IT Battalion in Kastellaun; the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion in Grafenwoehr is partnered with the Bundeswehr 383rd IT Battalion in Erfurt; and Thursday the 52d Strategic Signal Battalion in Stuttgart will formalize their partnership with the Bundeswehr 293rd IT Battalion at a ceremony in Murnau.
“This is one of the deepest relationships with the German Army, and it’s incredibly important that we continue to work to strengthen our partnership together,” Khatod said.
