No Marine wants to hear that they might not deploy and medical professionals throughout the wing are helping them put that fear to rest.
Members of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron (MWHS) 3’s medical team urge people to get their flu vaccine before it negatively affects the unit.
“Something communicable, like the flu, could take down a very large unit, very quickly,” said hospital corpsman first class Angela Walker, a MWHS-3 corpsman. “If everyone were to acquire a flu-like virus that spreads quickly, it could hamper our ability to effectively operate the way we should.”
Many service members are hesitant to get vaccinated due to the large amount of speculation over the “sickness” that is perceived to occur after the flu shot.
“Although you could have symptoms of the sickness, you won’t actually develop a cold from the vaccine itself,” said hospital corpsman second class Don Cline, a MWHS-3 corpsman. “Everything in the virus is killed off already and it is impossible to get sick from it.”
Walker debunks the myth of getting the virus from the vaccine.
“It’s a really common myth that the virus can be given to you by the vaccine,” said Walker. “There are a lot of germs and cold-type sicknesses during this season that will present very similar symptoms. These symptoms cannot be confused with the flu itself.”
In addition to ensuring Marines receive their vaccines, the medical teams want to stress that dependents need to be vaccinated as well.
“If you have children or family members who might be at risk, make sure to take them to get their vaccine,” said Walker. “Even though it’s important you are vaccinated as active duty or reservist, your family members are just as important to our success as a unit and a military as a whole.”
