FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Col. Jeffrey D. Pugh took command of the newly formed Mission Command Support Group (MSCG), 88th Readiness Division, when he uncased the colors during an activation and assumption of command ceremony at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Oct. 20, 2018.
“We will make sure the itty bitty specialty units have the support they need to do their jobs. We make sure they maintain readiness, and communicate it up the chain of command, so they can be part of the bigger force and deploy if called,” explained Command Sgt. Maj. Sara E. Noskowiak, senior noncommissioned officer of the MSCG.
Pugh and Noskowiak walked through the formation of 20subordinate units, changing the patches of the battalion echelon unit commanders to the black four leaf clover worn by 88th RD Soldiers, as their families looked from parallel rows on either side of the formation.
Pugh addressed the Soldiers of the subordinate units, now under their newly formed parent brigade, about what they can expect from him.
“I’m not perfect, but I will do my best to make ethically correct decisions every day, be highly motivated at all times, be an energy giver, not a taker. I will work to lift you up in your careers and life,” said Pugh, recognizing the importance of work life balance, and the impact attitude has on everything.
“My parents raised me to always give my best in everything I do, not for how it affects me, but for how my actions impact those around me,” Pugh says. His parents made the trip from Texas to Wisconsin to see their son take charge of the new brigade.
Pugh brings a positive, service oriented attitude, instilled by his family, with him to the MSCG. The leadership team hopes the MSCG provides for the holistic Army family, because the work and home life environments impact each other.
“What we do in the MCSG, takes care of families too,” said Noskowiak.
She talked about her sweetheart, J.R.’s reaction to becoming part of the Army family. “He was like, wow, you guys really mean what you say, when you say Army Family.”
“The one thing I’ve learned during my 35 years in the military, is that you never get through anything without being part of a team,” said Noskowiak, a former U.S. Army Reserve Music command sergeant major.
“It’s just like sharing the work at home. You spend so much time together, you know everyone’s strengths and where they need assistance.” said Noskowiak, comparing working relationship dynamics to home life dynamics.
Pugh’s wife of over thirty years, Connie, and his parents sit in the front row of the ceremony. He explains how much impact she has made on his career.
Pugh said his wife’s support made his participation in setting up the MSCG possible. “We’ve been together since we were 16 years old. She gives me the confidence to lead, because I know even if I mess up, she’s going to love me. There’s no way I would be here without her.”
“We are setting up this operational MSCG,” Noskowiak summarized the work the command team will do during their tenures. “We will establish processes, SOPs, and build teams. I want people to know where to go, and how to get something done if they need to. I want getting unit support to make sense. I want the MSCG to have feet to move forward on its own when I’m gone.”
