NMCP Recognizes National Respiratory Care Week, Oct. 21-27

    PORTSMOUTH, VA, UNITED STATES

    10.22.2018

Story by Petty Officer 1st Class Laura Myers

    Naval Medical Center - Portsmouth

National Respiratory Care Week is celebrated Oct. 21-27. Respiratory Therapy is the assessment and treatment of patients with both acute and chronic dysfunction of the cardiopulmonary system, from neonate to adulthood. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) has a team of 30 respiratory therapists, serving the entire medical center for all intensive and emergent needs.

For NMCP’s respiratory therapists, the week celebrates every breath improved, every family comforted and every team made more whole. It is a week to appreciate who they are as a result of their profession and to recognize the difference they make.

NMCP has the most registered respiratory therapists (RRT) in the Navy. An RRT credential is nationally recognized as the “standard of excellence” for respiratory care professionals. The certificate is issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). According to the NBRC web site, professionals who earn the RRT designation have obtained sufficient clinical skills through the education program from which they graduated and sufficient knowledge mastery to provide competent respiratory care.

This includes evaluating patient information, troubleshooting devices, performing procedures and implementing therapeutics.

NMCP’s respiratory care practitioners (RCP) and RRTs provide clinical expertise in the Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. They also provide care in the wards, emergency room, operating rooms, labor and delivery rooms, catheterization laboratory and in-house transports between units.

The RCPs respond to all Code Purple and Code Blue emergencies, which include obstetrics emergencies and complicated deliveries, heart attacks and stroke alerts. They are responsible for educating patients, families, physicians and nursing and medical staff.

“We proudly serve our military and their families,” said Jones and Oakes.
