EL PASO, Texas – Service to one’s country is a noble undertaking. Choosing a life of sacrifice and service can be challenging and that’s why it’s important to reflect on obstacles faced throughout each phase of the journey.
Capt. Jacob Lopez, assistant S4 for 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team “Bulldog,” 1st Armored Division provide insight to his journey to becoming an Army Logistician.
“I initially joined (the Army National Guard) back in 2010 as a mechanic,” said Lopez. I found this program called the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps), and ended up commissioning as a quartermaster officer in 2013.”
Lopez, a Latino American from South Texas, is a family man with a wife and three children he’s leaned on throughout his service.
“Corina and I were married back in Oct. 22, 2011,” he said. “We're going on seven years this year. I have a six year old, Caroline. Levi, who will be four in November, and I have a seven-month old baby, Adeline.”
A strong family support network is vital when faced with hard times and long days as a Soldier.
“There was a time I served as an executive officer for a forward support company with 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, at JBLM (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) and there were times where I'd either be spending the night in my office or getting home really late and it was hard for the family,” said Lopez. “The way I overcame that was just understanding that it wasn't going to be for the long haul. It was just temporary. And, of course, knowing that the wife can handle her own at home and keep things moving forward.”
Capt. Lopez ensures Bulldog Brigade is resourced with the appropriate materiel support so that we’re ready now and more lethal tomorrow.
