U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District just closed out another successful Federal Government Fiscal Year (FY); FY2018.

Each FY begins October 1 and ends September 30, and is typically used as a means to measure the success of the execution and delivery of the mission.

The Corps of Engineers is a globally-recognized leader in military and civil engineering, and science through a highly skilled workforce that provides significant value to our nation. During FY2018, Buffalo District obligated 117 contracts for more than $71.3 million, dredged 2.093 million cubic yards of material from navigable waterways, and issued 1,314 Regulatory permits.

The Corps of Engineers is building trusted relationships with many stakeholders widely across Buffalo District’s area of responsibility and across the nation through the expertise our people has to offer. This year alone, the Buffalo District delivered $109.1 million worth of programs which is $16.8 million higher than the $92.3 million programs delivered in FY2017.

“Buffalo District is “Moving Dirt” more so than ever before in our recent history. We are at this point, a result of the competence and commitment of our team at every level of the organization to solve problems,” stated Dave Romano, USACE Buffalo District Deputy District Engineer. “We are trusted to provide a calm and collected solution to difficult water resource challenges.”

Another success to note is that Buffalo District obligated $35 million in FUSRAP project funds.

“At the Luckey FUSRAP site we excavated and disposed of over 4,690 tons of contaminated soil during FY2018,” said Stephen Buechi, Environmental Project Management Team Leader, as he recalled this as a specific example of success for Buffalo District employees executing the mission.

Buffalo District saw success in their recreation mission throughout FY2018.

“Mount Morris Dam continued to provide quality, customer-focused services to a large, diverse audience by communicating important Corps of Engineers’ messages including, flood risk, significance of MMD & other civil works projects, STEM, water safety, and environmental stewardship through interpretive services and outreach programs,” said Steve Winslow, the Mount Morris Dam & Recreation Area manager.

The Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works mission provides a key foundational component of the nation’s public infrastructure through facilitation of economic growth, quality of life, environmental health and national security for the American people.

Buffalo District commander, Lieutenant Colonel Jason Toth highlighted that the District’s employees “demonstrated flexibility and grit to deliver the program” and executing the Corps of Engineers mission.

The District’s grit and flexibility were put to the test when employees were called upon to prepare and respond to natural and man-made disasters. In total 39 employees (approximately 12.6% of the Buffalo District workforce) deployed in support of four natural disasters: California Wildfires, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and Hurricane Florence. In fact, there were only 28 days last fiscal year without any Buffalo District employees deployed for one of these natural disasters, and 10 Buffalo District employees deployed more than once.

With the success of accomplishing the mission in FY2018 in our back pocket, Buffalo District and its employees is setting its sights on Building Strong and Taking Care of People again in FY2019.
