ABERDEEN, Md. (Oct. 7, 2018) – More than 600 scouts attended the Boy Scouts of America’s eighth annual STEM Merit Badge Day at Aberdeen Proving Ground on Oct. 6.
The BSA uses the event to encourage scouts to pursue merit badges in science, technology, engineering and math related fields.
Robert Agosta, a commercial architect, from Easton, Pennsylvania, taught the basics of architecture and drawing floor plans to scouts during the STEM day. Agosta was a boy scout himself when he was younger and has been doing architecture for over 25 years.
This was Agosta’s first year teaching at the STEM Merit Badge Day, and he said he was determined to spark an interest in architecture in those who attended his class.
“One of my goals was to give some basics of architecture so that they would get a little excited about it,” he said. “Architecture is everywhere. We interact with it every single day, so there’s value in communicating the importance of that.”
Tarrell Dixon, a 9 year-old cub scout from Troop 810 out of Abingdon, Maryland, attended the architecture class to earn a merit badge.
“It makes me feel proud when I get a new merit badge,” said Tarrell, who has been a part of scouting for four years and currently lives in Havre de Grace.
Tarrell said he likes the different ways architects design buildings.
BSA strives to groom the next generation of innovators and critical thinkers through STEM.
