    KATTERBACH KASERNE, Germany – Col. Richard A. Wholey Jr., commander, 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade (ADA BDE), South Carolina National Guard, command sergeant major, Tony Collins, 678th ADA BDE Command Sgt. Major, are recognizing two civilians for their outstanding efforts in supporting the 678th ADA BDE during their rotational deployment to Katterbach Kaserne, Germany, October 1, 2018.

    The 678th ADA BDE, South Carolina National Guard is responsible for standing up a new air defense brigade in Katterbach Kaserne, Germany. Part of this responsibility is operationalizing the headquarters building to include all forms of communication and communication support.

    “When we first arrived at Katterbach nearly eight months ago, we had many connectivity issues with our SIPR and NIPR capabilities,” shared Wholey. “These two worked diligently and even some weekends, getting us what we needed with our communication needs.”

    Civilian contractors are instrumental in the operations of the U.S. Army and with the 678th ADA BDE. The two civilians recognized today were Mr. Donnie Dukes and Mr. John Vanbeek, assigned to the 12th CAB, Katterbach, Kaserne.

    “It was great helping the 678th ADA BDE and I hope to keep on doing this as long as I can,” said Mr. Vanbeek. “I hope to have the opportunity to get away from the IT desk and do more IT projects. I am thankful for all the support.”

    Both civilians worked long hours with the 678th ADA BDE on several continuous connectivity issues. Many times they worked through the weekends to accomplish their tasks and were creative in their resolution.

    “After being in the military for 22 years, you are used to working on the weekends, it is sometimes part of the job” stated Mr. Dukes. “I want to thank everyone for all of your support and it has been a pleasure working with everyone.”

    The 678th ADA BDE, will continue to work with these professional civilians and rely on their expertise in accomplishing the air defense mission.

    “We never skipped a beat in reaching our objectives. Mr. Dukes and Mr. Vanbeek have been instrumental in making our mission successful,” stated Wholey.
