    Story by Sgt. William Brown

    5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wa – Warfighter Exercise 19-1, a tactical command post exercise which began October 1, 2018 on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, gives Soldiers the opportunity to train and hone their military occupation skills in a simulated deployed environment.

Pfc. Uhuru Evison, a Washington D.C. native, is a generator mechanic from America’s First Corps, Headquarters and Headquarters Company. As a generator mechanic, Evison plays a key role in maintaining the generator systems that provide power during training exercises and deployment operations, which allows I Corps to be able to deploy anywhere in the world and be self sufficient.

“I enjoy my job because I like working with my hands,” said Evison. “I find working with my hands is a faster and more efficient way of learning how to do things.”

During Warfighter, Evison assisted the fuel handlers in providing support to the units participating in the exercise.

“It’s a nice change of pace being able to assist the fuelers,” said Evison, “It is always good to learn new things.”

Evison’s drive doesn’t stop with just his passion to learn things pertaining to his Military Occupation Specialty or the military. He also plans to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the Army’s tuition assistance program by getting a degree in electrical engineering.
