Singapore Area Coordinator Prepares for Disaster

SINGAPORE (NNS) – National Preparedness Month (NPM), recognized each September and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides an opportunity to remind communities to prepare for disaster now and throughout the year. This NPM will focus on planning, with an overarching theme: “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.”

Each week in September had a focused theme towards individual planning. However, FEMA intends to promote preparedness all year, with the vision of a secure and resilient nation possessing the capabilities required throughout the community to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk.

The Singapore Area Coordinator (SAC) community is taking linear steps to ensure local preparedness aligns with the core goals and implementation of the National Preparedness System, as well as coordination for response to natural and man-made disasters.

“SAC’s effort is focused on community resiliency, ability to resist, absorb, recover from or adapt to an adverse occurrence,” said A. J. Frankel, SAC’s emergency management coordinator. “The fundamental corner stone of resiliency begins with awareness, prepared individuals and engaged leadership.”

It is highly advised that all Singapore area personnel register for the wide area alert notification (WAAN) system to improve response capability for any emergencies. Self-registration is done through any One-Net desktop via the “Purple Globe” icon on the taskbar.

While stationed overseas and serving in a dynamic security situation, it is critical to maintain situational awareness & receive timely information. Outside of the continental United States, this task shall include warning and notification of sponsored families living off-base.

“Evacuations can occur for any number of reasons, so be prepared,” said Frankel. “The initial goal is to get people out of harm’s way and make the process bearable.”

Navy personnel and families are strongly encouraged to strengthen emergency planning at home, as well as at work, by reading and following the tips and information found at www.ready.navy.mil
