Naval Hospital Pensacola recently opened a Contraceptive Clinic for all TRICARE beneficiaries that accepts walk-ins and appointments.

The Contraceptive Clinic’s walk-in service provides education, counseling, blood work, pregnancy testing and multiple contraception options.

"The walk-in piece of the Contraceptive Clinic is what makes it special," Lt. Cynthia Dehart, clinic manager for the Comprehensive Women's Health Center. "We [the Contraceptive Clinic] provide education on contraceptive methods, have patients complete lifestyle questionnaires for specific education tailored to their individual needs and in most scenarios, contraceptives are provided same or next day."

The goal of the Contraceptive Clinic is to support service members and their families by aligning their career goals and family planning. Having a plan can help families prepare for the responsibilities of having a baby.

"The Contraceptive Clinic speaks to the readiness of our active duty population," said Dehart, from Santa Maria, California. "An unexpected change in a Sailor’s health status, including a pregnancy, can affect operational readiness or their progression through training commands. Additionally, the clinic provides patients with education on surgical interventions and procedure scheduling."

The Contraceptive Clinic is available for all TRICARE beneficiaries, including TRICARE Selects, and is located within the Comprehensive Women's Health Center.

"The patients are offered convenience within the hospital," said Dehart. "We are located across from the Pediatrics Clinic and next to the Pharmacy.

“Patients can feel comfortable coming here to be seen,” said Dehart. “Right from the beginning, the corpsmen at the front desk have fantastic customer service and respect for privacy, and when patients are seen by the providers, we maintain a comfortable and trustworthy environment for the patient."

The clinic offers several contraception options that are either available the same day or during a follow-up appointment. Contraception options provided at NHP include injections, implanted devices, intrauterine device, emergency contraception, birth control pills, surgery, natural family planning and condoms.

Along with walk-ins, appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please contact the clinic at 850-505-6287 for more information.
