Senior Master Sgt. Rebecca L. Shell, Services Superintendent assigned to the 179th Airlift Wing Mission Support Group, was promoted to the rank of Chief Master Sgt. after being selected for the Stripes for Exceptional Performers II (STEP II) program August 4, at the 179th Airlift Wing here.

STEP II is a promotion program developed to provide promotion opportunities to Senior Master Sergeants and Chief Master Sergeants for outstanding, well-deserving, exceptionally performing enlisted Airmen.

To become eligible for STEP II promotion, Airmen must first be nominated by their immediate supervisor and have endorsement by the unit commander or a designated representative. The nominated Airman must meet a variety of requirements as well as be interviewed for the promotion in front of a board.

Shell’s previous accomplishments helped her stand out when being considered for promotion.

“Chief Master Sgt. Shell brings years of diverse education, proven leadership and steadfast wingman ship,” said Chief Master Sgt. Dana Togliatti, superintendent of the Force Support Squadron (FSS) at the 179th Airlift Wing. “After six deployments, she is one of the most knowledgeable leaders we have on the team. Chief Master Sgt. Shell has been functioning as a key leader for years and it was the collective decision of FSS leadership to nominate her for promotion through the STEP II program.”

Once being nominated for STEP II, Shell went before a board and was interviewed by the Ohio Air National Guard at Joint Force Head Quarters. She then was selected as one of the six Airmen in Ohio to earn the promotion.

With the FSS being as diverse as it is; consisting of Services, Personnel, Base Training, Civilian Personnel, Recruiting and Retention, Family Programs and Yellow Ribbon, Shell will be a vital asset in her new position as an additional FSS Chief.

“The STEP II program has not only assisted in the further development of our squadron, but also promoted a top notch deserving Senior NCO,” said Togliatti. “We are very proud and honored to have been able to promote Chief Master Sgt. Shell.”
