LVIV, Ukraine- Soldiers from the Tennessee Army National Guard visited the Lviv National School with Advanced Military and Physical Training named after the Battle of Kruty, Sept. 21, to speak with young cadets.

The visit began with the U.S. Soldiers discussion on their military background, experience, and advice as leaders in the United States Army National Guard and ended in an engaging question and answer session led by the cadets.

1st Sgt. Billy Yatesmatoy, who has two previous combat deployments, spoke on the importance of discipline and the effect it can have as young cadets up to senior non-commissioned officers and officers alike.

“I didn’t really understand discipline and attention to detail until I deployed to a combat zone and understood that checking each part of your uniform can help keep you alive.”

The cadets asked a variety of questions regarding the military lifestyle, discipline, physical fitness, and questions concerning the Ukrainian culture.

Maj. Wes Wingo discussed his experiences as a former cadet at The Citadel, a U.S. military school, and the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle to succeed.

“The four pillars that have significantly impacted my military and civilian career are physical training, discipline, character, and education,” stated Wingo. “While you are in school here, try to focus on these four areas in your life, and this can lead to success later on.”

“What you learn here will carry you now and throughout the rest of your life,” stated Wingo.

After the event, the Soldiers met and spoke with several of the cadets before returning to their duty station.

“It was such an honor to meet and speak with these young men,” stated Yatesmatoy. “They were very engaged in the discussion and asked several strong questions, and you could tell they were extremely interested in the U.S. military culture.”

The military school is an all-male school, taught by senior Ukrainian officers and consists of over 400 cadets between the ages of 12-16. The school is named after a locally famous battle in 1918, the Battle of Kruty.

The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment from the Tennessee Army National Guard is currently deployed to Yavoriv, Ukraine in support of developing their combat training center.
