    U.S. and Bulgarian Sniper Cross-training

NOVO SELO TRAINING AREA, Bulgaria – U.S. Army Snipers from Scouts Platoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, and Bulgarian Snipers from ISTAR (Intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance) Battalion, 61th Brigade, participated in a multi-day combined sniper exercise, Sept. 19th, 2018.

This exercise was led by the U.S. Army Snipers after being taught tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP’s) led by the Bulgarian Snipers the previous week.

“We had an amazing opportunity to be instructed by the Bulgarian Snipers, as well as showing them key differences in fundamentals of U.S. Army Snipers,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Bryan Amrein, a sniper team leader from Scouts Platoon. “My Soldiers and I look forward to continuing used tactics between our Armies to better protect our shared interests in future NATO operations.”

Snipers from both nations were eager to try out each other's respective weapons systems.

“Our section has been given a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and familiarization with famous weapons systems such as the SVD “Dragunov” and the Heckler & Koch MSG-90 Designated Marksman Rifles,” said U.S. Army Spc. Elliot Figueroa, a sniper team leader from Scouts Platoon. “Utilizing our training with the U.S. Army, we were able to effectively share our experience in techniques such as wind-calling, range estimation, collecting data on previous engagements, movement, and proper camouflage for the variable environments.”

Many of the American Snipers were very eager to fire the “Dragunov” for the first time and we were just as excited to fire the Barrett 50 Cal., said Bulgarian 1st Lt. Petar Hristov from ISTAR Battalion.

“Having our American allies here training with us in Bulgaria is very important because it makes our NATO partnership that much closer and that much stronger,” said Hristov.
