FORT GORDON, Ga. – Instructors at the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Detachment Fort Gordon recently developed and delivered rating advancement training to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Georgia Sailors.

During a six-week period, spanning through July and August, Cryptologic Technician (Collection) (CTR) 1st Class Kevin Barnes and Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Justin Freeman created over 200 slides consisting of relevant information from the CTR rating bibliographies and rating training manuals to help Sailors prepare for the September advancement examination cycle.

"The colocation of NIOC Georgia, CIWT Det. Fort Gordon, and Navy Operational Support Center Augusta provides us with the opportunities to incorporate nearly every aspect of the CTR rating, and brings about an in-depth and wide range of subject matter expertise from MCS-21 operators to ACRC's to national watch standers,” said Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Geoff Reeves. “It is always a step forward for training within the community when we can draw upon so much fleet experience to usher in, via advancement in rate training, a new generation of CTR leaders."

Over a three-week period for three days each week, the training was delivered to the NIOC Georgia Sailors in one hour blocks of classroom facilitation.

“I found the in rate advancement training very useful,” shared Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Seaman Jessica Harvey, after attending multiple training sessions. “It helped me remember topics I learned in ‘A’ school and pointed me in the right direction on how and what to study for my next advancement exam.”

The training was organized into seven topic sections reflecting the advancement exam profile sheets that break down Sailors’ test scores.

“We organized the training this way to emphasize the topic areas and to allow Sailors to decide which training sessions they would like to participate in based on their performance in previous cycles” said Barnes. “Our goal was to take thousands of pages of documentation from the bibliographies and summarize them into easily digestible blocks of study. We made it a point to direct students to the proper references for each topic so they could study more in-depth on their own time if they desired.”

The CIWT Det. Fort Gordon instructors are also working with Center for Military Advancement and Training (CMATT), an advancement resource for the intelligence community on the classified network, to make the training material available to a wider audience, and to collaborate with other commands to enhance and unify CTR rating training.

The Center for Information Warfare Training delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
