SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) hosted a small boat industry day on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado today to explore increased opportunities for current industry partners to support Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) operations.

Dave Noel, NECC Force Maintenance Director, kicked off the morning with a welcome brief before the group headed to the boat barn to receive a tour of the small boats. “The goal for this event is to let the industry base understand what the requirements are for the warfighter,” said Noel.

The event provided maritime commercial service companies an opportunity to better understand the Navy boat maintenance requirements in an effort to increase industrial base participation resulting in a win-win partnership.

During the tour of the boat barn, industry had the opportunity to tour the Navy’s newest small boat, the Mk-VI patrol boat. The MK VI is employed by the Coastal Riverine Force and is capable of patrolling littoral areas beyond sheltered harbors and bays to provide force protection of friendly and coalition forces and critical infrastructure. Other Coastal Riverine Force boats on display included the 34-foot patrol boat and the 25-foot patrol boat.

Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians were on hand to discuss the maintenance needs of the seven, eight and nine-meter rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs). Those RHIBs provide EOD teams and Navy Divers a high-speed, high-buoyancy, extreme-weather craft for underwater operations.

An 11-meter RHIB was also available to tour. These boats are used by the expeditionary force in support of maritime interdiction, explosive ordnance disposal and visit, board, search and seizure operations at sea.
The purpose of the industry day was to eliminate barriers for regional industry partners by presenting an opportunity for industry base
professionals to see the boats first hand, ask questions and increase understanding of Navy requirements for maintenance, overhaul, and other commercial services.

The small boat industry day is different from traditional industry days because SWRMC and NECC are working with existing contractors to improve communication and information, find creative solutions to obstacles and encourage greater participation among industry maintenance partners. Most other industry days occur at the acquisition phase of the contract.
