OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Massachusetts-- Work was underway this summer to bring comprehensive, high-performance wireless internet coverage to the 102nd Intelligence Wing dormitories, also known as the Troop Camp. The 102nd Chief’s Council, in partnership with the 212th Engineering Installation Squadron and several volunteers, led the self-help project.

The completed upgrade now provides wireless coverage using technology designed to support speeds up to 100 megabits per second in both wing dormitory buildings.

“We put in a commercial grade Wi-Fi system that’s a cloud managed service. Everyone will use a username and password for internet access,” said Chief Master Sgt. Stephen Voto, 212 EIS maintenance superintendent.

Wireless connectivity was first introduced to the Troop Camp around 2010 when Airmen were still only using one device to connect to the internet.

According to Voto, the wireless upgrade is a high density of modern access points installed which will allow stronger connections and a higher number of devices to receive signals.

“We basically went from DSL to high-speed highway,” said Senior Master Sgt. Joel Martinath, 212 EIS engineer, “We installed about 80 wireless access points in total throughout the two buildings, including 800 feet of cable.”

The installation was complete at the end of August, so the September drill was the first where the new capability was put to the test for the majority of Airmen. So far, reports have been very positive.

“It’s like night and day,” said an NCO who regularly stays at the Troop Camp on drill weekends, “Internet coverage here was so spotty, but now it’s the same speed that I have at home, if not better.”

“When Airmen come down here they want some kind of incentive to stay at the dorm, so the biggest concern with the younger members is Wi-Fi access,” said Voto, “This was a self-help project for the wing, so we invited a lot of people to come work on this building hoping that people will feel more likely to come stay on base. Making this a self-help project actually allowed us to finish the project quicker.”

If you stay in the Troop Camp and have not received your wireless internet access instructions, contact your unit lodging representative or nearest chief master sergeant.

Stay tuned for more Troop Camp upgrades and beautification projects in the coming months.
