Established in 2003, the Salute to Servicewomen Award has evolved from honoring women veterans to honoring women who are currently serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, including the National Guard and Reserve components of each branch.
Master Sgt. Kendra Sorice, 70th ISRW Inspector General Complaints and Resolutions superintendent, was awarded the 2017-2018 Servicewomen of the Year for the U.S. Air Force, during the 98th Annual National Convention, August 27, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“This prestigious award is presented annually by the American Legion Auxiliary’s Past Presidents Parley program to women who demonstrate an outstanding record of military service to our nation as part of the War on Terrorism,” said Diane Duscheck, American Legion Auxiliary National President.
Part of the package nomination included Sorice submitting a 750 words or less narrative that shows her demonstrating exemplary service both in and out of uniform.
In her paper, Sorice highlighted her current and past duty positions, such as Airman Dorm Leader.
“My (current) job aligns perfectly with my daily goals as it consist primarily of listening to the concerns of Airmen and finding out the facts behind their concerns and having them addressed accordingly,” she said.
Additionally, Sorice also mentioned her volunteer efforts around the local community.
“I have supported the communities of Baltimore, Glen Burnie, and areas around the DMV by volunteering and leading efforts to assist with low income families. The bulk of my volunteer efforts have been through an organization called Paul’s Place where food, clothing, education, and living arrangements are provided to low income and homeless families in the Baltimore area,” Sorice said.
Her efforts have contributed to the feeding and clothing of well over 15,000 families over the past seven years and being recognized as a top volunteer by Paul’s Place as well as becoming an honorary ambassador for the program.
Furthermore, Sorice has tutored young men and women in Math and English in local schools near Fort Meade resulting in more than 50 students increasing their grades over a marking period and more specifically two students ranking in their schools math competitions. She has also served as a preschool teacher for her church and has provided spiritual tools for more than 500 youths.
“Honestly I was extremely surprised,” Sorice said on being notified of being selected. “I opened the e-mail, logged out of my computer and logged back in, just to make sure I wasn't imagining things. After the initial shock, I felt humbled and blessed that the American Legion Auxiliary appreciated me, just being me. My write-up was a direct reflection of myself, and how much I care about people and being a positive impact and influence in the world both in and out of uniform.”
Sorice stated in her speech during the ceremony, “I only hope that when I take off this uniform, that one person can say that I impacted their life in a positive way. We are here to impact the world, and it only takes one person to do or show one act of kindness toward another person.”
