The Hampton Roads Naval Museum hosted a special tour of its gallery this morning. Museum Educator, Joseph Miechle and Museum Volunteer Russ Martin teamed up to host an interpreted educational tour for a group from the non-profit Portco. The Portsmouth, Virginia based non-profit is an Employment Services Organization which provides transitional, supported employment and vocational services to individuals with disabilities.

The tour commenced in the museum’s Battle of Hampton Roads area, where participants had the opportunity to get a close up look at models of sailing ships. The tour progressed through the Civil War Gallery, and paused briefly in the museum’s Jamestown Exposition exhibit to watch a short video. Thereafter, the group progressed through the Battle of the Atlantic exhibit, where information about the enigma machine was presented. Participants spent some time looking at a detailed diorama in the exhibit area, and also had the opportunity to try on some historical uniforms. At the conclusion of the tour, each participant received a wooden challenge coin as a token of their visit. Quanshia Rogers, the outreach coordinator for the group, expressed her appreciation for putting together an engaging tour at the conclusion of the hour-long tour.
