CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – The Executive Officer of Camp Lemonnier (CLDJ), Cmdr. Justin S. Cross, officially opened the fall season 2018 CLDJ Captain’s Cup Competition at a ceremony held at the fitness center, Sept. 1, 2018.

Captain's Cup will feature a series of events during a four-week period designed to challenge participants as well as to boost morale. A trophy will be presented to the championship team at the end of the competition.
Cross said that the 17 teams participating in the event is a record number and a true representation of life at the East African base.

“We’re really excited for this year’s Captain’s Cup,” Cross said. “All U.S. military services, civilians and coalition military are represented.”

Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Site Director, Momoyo Harris, said the games are one of the most anticipated events offered by MWR.

“In my view, [the games] help with team building, especially here in Djibouti, where we are away from our families,” Harris said. “The command becomes the family - the events bring [people] closer together.”

Captain’s Cup is held twice each year at Camp Lemonnier; once in the spring and again in the fall.

Some of the competitions scheduled to take place include athletic events such as a three-point basketball shootout, soccer, volleyball, swimming and a tug of war.

Non-sporting events like Texas hold ‘em, nine-ball billiards and a karaoke contest are also available.

Camp Lemonnier is home to more than 5,000 service members, civilian employees and contractors and all are eligible to field a team.

Cross said that the games are a great way for people on base to make new friends.

“It should be a lot of fun and a great way to get to know each other in a competitive environment,” Cross said. “We can’t wait to see who’s going to win this year’s Captain’s Cup.”

Camp Lemonnier is one of Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, installations that conducts six lines of operation to support air operations, port operations, safety, security, quality of life, and what is called the core: the fuels, water and power that keep the bases operating.

Camp Lemonnier’s mission includes enabling joint warfighters operating forward and to reinforce the U.S. – Djibouti relationship by providing exceptional services and facilities for the tenant commands, transient U.S. assets and service members.
