Marine Corps career recruiter retires after 23 years

    PROVIDENCE, RI, UNITED STATES

    07.27.2018

    Story by Sgt. Connor Hancock

    1st Marine Corps District

During the ceremony, Wright was recognized for her 23 years of honorable service in the military and the lasting impact her efforts will have as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.
Wright enlisted in the Marine Corps on Nov. 21, 1995, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. Wright served in a multitude of billets and military occupational specialties, however, her recent years were focused on finding the next generation of Marines, and she was recognized by her peers as an expert in all aspects relating to Marine Corps recruiting.
During her time on recruiting duty, she served in Recruiting Station Portsmouth, RS Springfield, and as an operations chief at 1st Marine Corps Recruiting District in New York.
According to Wright, one of her most rewarding duties was serving as an operations chief at Recruiting Station Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
“I loved operations,” Wright said. “It was very unique and challenging. If you can’t foresee an entire year out, it’s not a place that you need to be.”
After Wright took over as operations chief in Recruiting Station Portsmouth, the station was recognized as the best Recruiting Station in the Eastern Recruiting Region for two years in a row.
While on active duty, Wright said the Marines she worked with helped develop her leadership skills.
“Marines who were junior to me in rank have taught me how to be a better leader,” said Wright. “If it weren’t for those Marines; I probably wouldn’t have been the leader I am today. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can learn something from everyone.”
Throughout her busy career, Wright also found time to volunteer for various community programs and events including rebuilding houses after the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Wright is now a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor at Beverly High School in Massachusetts and plans on becoming a doctor in physical therapy.
“I will use the coaching and mentoring skills I learned in the Marine Corps with patients and make sure they are doing the exercises they need to do to make their bodies better,” Wright said.
