CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan— The Pure Praxis group performed a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Performance Education Workshop for Marines and sailors Aug. 28 at the Camp Foster theater.

Pure Praxis is a private company contracted by the Department of the Navy. The Pure Praxis group is sent out by the DoN once a year to perform for military personnel. Since contracted in 2015, the group has reached over 225,000 military members.

“There’s not a Marine out there who, by the time they are in Okinawa, has not had at least one, five or ten briefs on sexual assault,” said Brig. Gen. Paul J. Rock Jr., Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler and Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “Marines understand sexual assault is wrong, but they may still lack the tools to recognize, intervene and assist victims when there is an opportunity or a necessity to do that.”

SAPR training is an annual training requirement for Marines.

The SAPR training by Pure Praxis is a new approach to give military members the tools to prevent sexual assault and help victims.

Pure Praxis’ motto states that they offer an alternate learning opportunity to the normal PowerPoint presentation.

The hour-long program was based around an interactive theater presentation from four actors. At key moments, the presentation was paused by the facilitators and the audience was solicited for answers on how they would respond in the scenario. Audience members were also called onto the stage for improvised acting.

“I think it’s very important Marine Corps wide, but even more so for Camp Foster,” said Judy Nicholson, Installation Sexual Assault Response Coordinator. “We are a close-knit community. It gets kind of mundane when you’re trying to put out the same message over and over, so having that variety come in with the acting group, provides that current way to reach sailors and Marines and it’s super beneficial.”
