    Story by William Roche

    U.S. Army Cyber Command

    CYBER SNAPSHOT: Pfc. Lauren Shelsby

    Home: South Africa
Position: Student, U.S. Army Cyber School
(NOTE: Rank and position are correct as of time of interview)

    QUICK SKETCH:
-- Completed Cyber Operations Specialist (Military Occupational Specialty 17C) training and awaiting first Army assignment at time of interview
-- Met her husband, a U.S. Navy sailor, while studying microbiology and biomechanics in the Middle East
-- Says she joined the U.S. Army because she wanted to give something back to her adopted country

ON WHY SHE CHOSE ARMY CYBER:
"Computers have always interested me. I was in biomechanics, which is basically programming, but on an organic level. So this is programming, but on an IT level, technology stuff, man-made technology. So the concept is the same somewhat, but in different environments."

“Everything that we touch, do, every single part of our lives, whether it's professional or personal or any manner of things, technology's always there. And it's constantly booming and growing, so being able to be part of that growing community … is a huge part of it. And staying relevant is a huge part of it, because I don't want to learn something and, first of all, end up bored with it, and second of all, not be able to move with it because it's become irrelevant.”

ON STAYING CYBER IN THE ARMY:
"If (someone is) going to be staying cyber in the military…they're going to stay because they love being in the military. Because you will always -- always -- make more money going civilian and doing this as a contractor versus staying. (The Army offers pride in fulfilling an obligation) larger than yourself and being part of a team that's so old and steeped in tradition. It's an honor to be able to serve.”

ON WHAT ADVICE SHE WOULD GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING AN ARMY CYBER CAREER:
“Just know that it's not … your average wake-up-and-go-do-it-and-go-home-and-sleep. No. I wake up and I think about programming. I dream about programming. And it's not only that. When I go home I mess with my computer constantly. All the time. It's not just going to work and doing the job. It's actually fitting it into your personal life, and being interested about it as well. ... It's like you live and breathe cyber. You don't just come in and do whatever and then just leave it at the door. That's not how cyber works.”
