OAK HARBOR, Wash. (NNS) – Capt. Matt Arny relieved Capt. Geoffrey Moore as commanding officer of Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island during a change of command ceremony at NAS Whidbey Island, Aug. 17.

Moore served as commander since Feb. 2016, providing exemplary leadership and visionary planning which enabled the installation to succeed in all mission areas and garnered NAS Whidbey Island the 2018 Commander in Chief Installation Excellence Award.

As commanding officer of NAS Whidbey Island, Moore’s leadership was critical to the completion of over $140 million in military construction projects supporting the Navy’s electronic attack, patrol and reconnaissance squadrons.

Moore also maximized efforts in environmental management and energy savings which was recognized by the installation’s achievement of the 2017 Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Award. Moore created a robust base-wide safety program that worked closely with all tenant commands, reducing accidents and earning the 2017 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award.

“The only way we could gap the hardest job at Naval Air Forces is because of Geoff Moore,” said Rear Adm. Dell Bull, special assistant for Naval Air Systems Command, remembering Capt. Moore’s reliability during a previous command. “Things ran much smoother when Geoff was in charge. He saved our bacon more times than I can count. He is one of the most brilliant people I have ever known. Methodical, calm, straightforward - I cannot say enough about somebody like Geoff Moore.”

After Bull’s speech, Rear Adm. Scott Gray, commander, Navy Region Northwest, presented Moore with an end of tour award, the Legion of Merit, recognizing Moore’s exemplary leadership and professional conduct since the beginning of his command at NAS Whidbey Island.

Moore then stood up and gave his final remarks as commander of NAS Whidbey Island, thanking family members and all those in attendance for the ceremony. Moore specifically thanked the Sailors stationed at NAS Whidbey Island for the recognition of his end of tour award.

“We, and I mean them, right there in the white uniforms, we did that. That wasn’t just one person, and it truly is amazing what 10,500 Sailors and government civil service workers with the support of our families and the community can do over the course of two-and-a-half years. I will cherish this medal forever because it symbolizes not what I did, but what we accomplished. Absolutely mind-blowing. Easily, this tour has been the highlight of 30 years and counting in uniform.”

Reading of orders then took place, and Capt. Arny assumed command of NAS Whidbey Island emphasizing his gratitude at receiving the opportunity to lead such a team as NAS Whidbey Island.

“I am humbled and excited to be here today, assuming command of this great air station, Whidbey Island, and I’m proud to be a member of Team Whidbey and our community. To the members of the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island command, serve proudly, choose to be happy and follow your core values. I am confident in our ability to succeed and in my ability to proudly serve you in this role.”
