SAN DIEGO-- The 37th Surface Line Week (SLW) competition concluded Aug. 17 after two weeks of professional and athletic events among San Diego’s Surface Warriors.

The annual competition provided an opportunity for Sailors, Marines, Department of the Navy civilians, and federal employees to come together and engage in some friendly competition, promoting comradery across the waterfront. SLW gives all members of the community the opportunity to showcase their professional and athletic skills.

“This is a very special event with that created spectacular competition between 30 ships across almost 40 events,” said Capt. Chris Engdahl, chief of staff, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet during the SLW closing ceremony. “We do this event so you get professional, tactical training and you are surrounded by folks who have met milestones that we all want to achieve.”

SLW events provide an excellent opportunity for the members of the Surface Warfare community to connect and compete with their peers from other ships.

In addition to all of the competition, local food trucks attended some of the events to provide fuel for all of the competitors.

“We closed out two weeks of hard fought competition in sporting events, professional development events and built comradery among different commands and personnel,” said Yeoman 1st Class Darrell Lamber, who is assigned to Transient Processing Unit, San Diego during SLW closing ceremony.

This year featured professional skills challenges such as welding, shiphandling, valve packing, marksmanship, and various culinary competitions, while the athletic events included softball, volleyball, powerlifting, CrossFit events, a 5K race, and much more.

The two-week long challenge concluded with individual event winners announced. The overall winners will be announced after the Surface Warfare Ball in San Diego on Aug. 25.
