From the International Security Assistance Force - Afghanistan Public Affairs Office
KABUL, Afghanistan — Spanish Army Colonel Jaime Ascanio of Santa Cruz De Tenife, assumed authority as RC-West's Chief of Staff from Spanish Army Colonel Javier Abajo of Madrid, during a ceremony at Camp Arena. The ceremony was officiated by Italian Army Brigadier General Paolo Serra, commanding officer of RC-West, Jan. 14.
"Today I am saying goodbye with a sentiment of leaving the ship in the middle of the trip and with two comrades less in our ranks," stated Abajo during his speech. "We tried to provide a bit of hope to this country, with the knowledge that by supporting the development of Afghanistan we are helping to build a safer international community and increase the security of our countries."
During Colonel Abajo's 4-month deployment as chief of staff, RC-West has been involved in 59 major incidents, 11 soldiers were wounded and two Spanish soldiers lost their lives in a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device attack near Shindand.
During the traditional transfer of authority ceremony, where the NATO flag was passed from the outgoing chief to the incoming, Colonel Ascanio assumed duty for his 6-month tour.
"I warmly welcome you into the RC-West family, Colonel Ascanio," stated Serra. "I am sure that the staff shaped by your predecessor will follow you towards the goals this mission requires of all of us."
After formally assuming command, Ascanio made his first official speech to the men and women of RC-West.
"I have seen enthusiasm in your eyes and professionalism in your hands," stated Colonel Ascanio. "You have made true the motto of this headquarters – 'Many nations, but only one mission.' For me this is not the time for words, it is the time to roll up my sleeves and put all my effort into being your chief of staff."
