JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 15, 2018) Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio has a two-part mission: recruiting the best and brightest for naval service and shipping future Sailors to Recruit Training Command (RTC).

It takes more than just recruiters to prospect, but also support personnel to process, classify, and ship future Sailors to RTC.

The NRD Liaison Office located with Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) San Antonio plays a significant role in the process.

During the “Summer Surge” of recruiting, the Navy Liaison Office made history by processing 235 future Sailors for shipping to RTC in the month of July, this highest number of any MEPS within Navy Recruiting Region West’s area of responsibility.

According to Javier Elias of San Antonio, the supervisor assigned to the Enlisted Processing Division, the team shipped daily an average of 14 young men and women to basic training.

“This was an amazing accomplishment,” said Elias. “We are limited to processing shippers Monday thru Thursday, and on some days we processed up to 30 future Sailors.”

Shipping future Sailors to RTC is not just putting them on a flight stated Elias.

“Once a shipper comes off the medical floor, each future Sailor requires a minimum of 10-15 minutes to update either their marriage, dependent, education or advancement status, changes in address and or any civil involvement,” said Elias. “Additional we address any last minute questions or concerns by them or their family.”

Additionally, Elias stated it takes a team effort to accomplish such a feat.

“Personnel Specialist 1st Class Elbony Harris of Selma, Ala., led this tremendous feat without fail or flaw,” said Elias. “Having been recently assigned this position, she immediately took complete control and ensured that the entire month went without a hitch.”

Harris, who was recently selected for chief petty officer, praised her team for the accomplishment.

“The team, to include our civilians and contractors, were able to identify discrepancies, correct them, upload each and every service record document and ensure that every individual arrived to basic training on their assigned date(s) and with all required documents,” said Harris. “Because of their efforts the Navy team was able to ship the highest shipping numbers in July.”

The Navy’s recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
