U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers get back to basics

    FORT MCCOY, WI, UNITED STATES

    Exercise News Day

FORT MCCOY, Wis. — U.S. Army Reserve Military Police performed basic warrior task and law enforcement training located on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Aug. 6-9.

The event, Operation Blue Shield, is an MP training exercise that focused specifically on skills that reserve Soldiers don’t use every day, as most return to civilian life for extended periods of time. That’s why practicing these basic soldiering skills and military police tactics are vital for mission success.

“This really fires me up … fires my Soldiers up,” said Sgt. Amira Field with the 302nd MP Company. It has given her the time to ensure her Soldiers know what to expect in the event they encounter any of these situations.

They focused on Soldier skills such as casualty care and evacuation, reacted to chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear (CBRN) threats, and more. MPs need to be efficient, capable and confident in detention operations, core security and mobility support, to include preparation of command objectives and training plans.

Soldiers trained in the field for hours as the humidity hit 84 percent, but they drove on, refamiliarizing and rehearsing vital Soldier skills. Being twice the citizen requires a delicate balance of managing civilian life and Army life; but the mission continues.

“The CBRN training is particularly useful, as it is often overlooked. If you don’t use it, you lose it … we’re trying to get a good refresher on it,” said Spc. Michael Hubner, with the 302nd MP Co. As a professional firefighter and EMT in his civilian life, Hubner also believes in “gaining a better understanding of the military’s tactical combat care. It’s been a while for most of us, so it’s a good opportunity.”

According to the Army’s personnel office, the reserve component is comprised of nearly 200,000 personnel. To be effective with such numbers, they train as they fight; maintaining their status as the most capable, combat ready, and lethal federal reserve force in the history of the nation. These are perishable and valuable skills for military and civilian toolboxes alike.
