‘Searching the needle at the bottom of the sea’, ‘blowing to the ears’ in addition to ‘grasping the peacock’s tail’, are some of the movements Veterans did with precision and skill in the Tai Chi class held at the Omaha Disabled American Veterans Center, Aug 7.
Veterans enrolled in the Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System are now afforded the opportunity to take part in the Whole Health Care Initiative which offers forms of movement therapy to assist Veterans with balance, pain and stress related conditions.
“A major part of the program is focused on wellness versus the current model of care that fixes the health problem,” Larry Krafka said, NWIHCS Whole Health Clinical Coordinator.
NWIHCS, along with 17 other flagship sites, was chosen across the country to implement this new model of care to Veterans. In addition to Tai Chi, Yoga and Qigong are also incorporated into the plan.
Army Veteran James McDonald is wheelchair bound, but finds the class beneficial. “I’m on the wrong side of healthy, but my intention is to get on the right side,” McDonald said. “With this type of remedy, you don’t have to take a shot. I have been coming here for a little more than two months, and I can feel the improvement in flexibility. I feel calmer.”
For McDonald, this class was a big step for him. “I’m a loner, I admit. This is just a tiny step towards a normalcy for me. But I find that I’m eating better since being here in this class also.”
Tai Chi is offered every Tuesday through Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. at the DAV in Omaha at 4515F Street.
Veterans who are enrolled as patients at the NWIHCS are welcome to join the class.
