As Soldiers assigned to the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division worked in the tireless and unrelenting Bavarian sun in Illesheim, Germany, their thoughts were consumed by the catastrophic hailstorm which hurled baseball-sized chunks of ice onto their homes in Fort Carson on August 6, 2018.

Immense amounts of monetary and property damage for the Soldiers of 4th CAB, who recently began a rotation in Central and Eastern Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, resulted from the storm.

“My car is totaled,” said Sgt. Francisco Rivas, an aviation sergeant with 6th Squadron, 17th Attack Recon Squadron. “The windshield, body and everything is messed up.”

The hushed whispers around the base along with concerned and heated glances reflect the unease and worry that comes with such an event but Soldiers of the 4th CAB have not let this derail their mission.

“The last hail and wind storms that we’ve had have hit my house pretty hard,” said Rivas. “But I’ve told my wife to try not to worry about it. I’ll figure out something as soon as I can.”

The chaos and destruction of the hailstorm, although unwelcome, is not uncommon in the Fort Carson area.

“On June 11, our departure day, we were flying over here and when we landed, we learned there was a pretty major hailstorm on the south side of Colorado Springs,” said 1st Lt. Daniel Goodman the executive officer of Company Bravo, 3rd Assault Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment. “I talked with my roommate, who was still back in Colorado, and he told me that most of the cars in the area were totaled or pretty badly damaged, so we started going through the claims process.”

The 4th CAB command teams took quick action to ensure that their Soldiers were prepared to face the damages caused by the previous storm.

“Just a day later, we got a directive to start compiling what the damages were,” said Goodman. “The best thing we did as a brigade was to be proactive there, we weren’t waiting for people to report. We were going out and getting information.”

The 4th CAB is implementing the previously successful strategies for this storm, ensuring that their commitment to peace and stability in the region will not falter.

“We’ve reached out at the company level already to try to assess damage” said Goodman. “I don’t think this is or will be a crisis, I think the car insurance in our area will adequately handle it.”
