BARTON BARRACKS, ANSBACH, GERMANY – Members of the 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade (ADA BDE), South Carolina Army National Guard, headquartered in Eastover, South Carolina, completed the military Security Plus course, which will allow these soldiers to become subject matter experts on cyber security, IT fundamentals and other related hardware/software issues, Barton Barracks, Germany, July 16 - 27, 2018.

“Security plus is the baseline security course across the U.S. military, and it also applies to the civilian sector teaching you everything from recognizing basic threats to any computer hardware and software issue,” states Spc. Michael Arthur, IT Tech, S-6. “It teaches you the basic processes for hardening your systems against threats as well as anything that might forensically help you find out who perpetrated the attacks, where it came from and anything you can do to prevent it from happening.”

There were 10 total members attending the class, including seven from the 678th Air Defense Air Artillery Brigade, Maj. Dennis Freeman, 2nd lt. Kareem Sellers, Chief Warrant Officer James Suber, Staff Sgt. Kasey Beymer, Sgt. Thomas Allen, Sgt. Cliff Harley and Spc. Michael Arthur.

“For me I am a signal officer, 25 A, I am required to have security plus for my military job,” commented Sellars. “That way I can make changes if someone needs assistance with their computer, for example administration rights.”

The course is very important for advancement in several areas of the military and civilian employment. One benefit, the training is DOD compliant, which opens up the prospect to be eligible for many government jobs.

“It is a requirement to be able to do anything with administration privileges,” adds Arthur about the possibilities. “It is also a requirement for Warrant Officer School and since I am definitely trying to get to that step sooner than later, hopefully it will boost me up on that ladder.”

Instructor Ian Neal from Glasgow, Scotland taught the two week course, while Staff Sgt. Kasey Beymer finished with the highest overall average.

“A Normal day started fairly early, it was all day from 0800 – 1800, a straight class room environment,” mentioned Freeman. “There was a requested additional 5 hours of studying at night for a minimum. The instructor had a program to follow and that is how he said you would be able to get through the program. “

Adding to their resumes, this course is an opportunity for Guardsmen to get ahead of their peers with their civilian jobs. It can be expensive for civilian employers, costing several hundreds of dollars to take the required tests and thousands of dollars for any type of training towards Security Plus certification.

“The course was definitely a learning experience, prior to this course, I had a week in Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC), so the instructor definitely took his time to make sure we understood the material for the test and our prepping for the test,” remarked Sellers. “I am not an expert, not yet, prior to the course I had a 10% knowledge base and I feel I am now to an 80% knowledge base.”

This course was offered to those requiring special skill sets for their military jobs. Each member of the class wanted to thank Maj. Clay Middleton, Officer in Charge (OIC), S-6 shop, for the opportunity to take the class and to spearhead scheduling it.
