KAHULUI, Hawaii—About 350 Guard, Reserve, and active duty military members are arriving on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai this week to set up no-cost health care clinics as part of a U.S. military Innovative Readiness Training initiative called Tropic Care Maui County 2018. Military members will provide medical, vision, and dental services at sites in Central Maui, Kihei, Lahaina, Hana, Molokai, and Lanai from August 11-19.
The Department of Defense mission will allow service members to participate in readiness training while providing a benefit to people in the islands. “Readiness is part of our DNA,” said Lt. Col. James Jones of the Alabama Air National Guard, the officer in charge for Tropic Care Maui County 2018. “Every aspect of this mission is real-world, hands-on training.”
The training mission is led by the Air National Guard and supported by members of the Air Force, Army, Navy Reserve, and Marine Corps Reserve. The County of Maui and the Hawaii State Department of Health are partners with the military for the mission. Military members are working closely with community members to organize the clinics.
All are invited to receive services. No insurance, proof of income, residency, or photo identification is necessary. All clinics will provide physical health exams, school sports physicals (must bring school form), and blood pressure and disease screenings. Dental services will consist of exams, fillings, and extractions. Eye care services will include vision screenings and prescriptions. An additional service of single-vision eyeglass fabrication will be provided at the four Maui clinics, subject to stock on hand; no outside eyeglass prescriptions will be fulfilled. Patients are limited to one service per day.
Clinic hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, with limited Sunday hours at the Kihei and Lahaina clinics of 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Dental services at Molokai, Lanai, and Hana will conclude on August 18, and hours for medical and vision services at those three sites and the Central Maui site will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on August 19. Clinic hours are subject to change based on service and equipment availability and training needs. A listing of clinic locations and other information is available at www.mauicounty.gov/tropiccare.
Patients will be seen on a first-come/first-serve basis, and they will not be able to reserve appointments for later days. Clinic organizers recommend that patients arrive as soon as possible during clinic hours to secure a same-day service time.
Maui County hosted a similar Innovative Readiness Training mission in 2013. Other IRT mission locations in 2018 have included Kauai, Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, and Kentucky.
