Naval Support Facility Deveselu, Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Romania and Romanian 99th Military Base service members with partner nation government institutions and their families came together on base to celebrate and continue their built relationship for the 4th annual Partnership Day, August 2.

Partnership Day, an annual event, highlights the United States and Romania shared vision and reaffirm their strong work together towards contributing to the NATO missile defense capability, as a key mission of the Alliance, with the aim of providing full coverage and protection for all NATO European populations, territory and forces, as well as to shape NATO's central role in missile defense in Europe.

This year’s theme is “Proven Partners NATO’s frontline defense for ballistic missile defense One Team One Fight”. U.S. personnel continue to have a great working relationship with our Romanian partners, specifically the 99th. The multinational base with local civil authorities in Olt and Dolj counties and Bucharest, the nation’s capital have regularly conducted bilateral training events, team building activities, and community relations projects. They will also participate in Constanta’s Romania’s Navy Day later this month.

Last month in July, NSF Deveselu and Romania held the joint-base’s largest multinational exercise, SHIELDEX 18, which was also the first force protection, emergency operation exercise conducted on Romanian 99th Military Base that encompassed assets from Commander, Navy installations Command within Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia and Romanian military entities throughout Southern Romania.

99th service members organized the barbecue, with roasted pig and lamb with the AAMDS Romania chief mess cooking the hot dogs, chicken and hamburgers while the Morale, Welfare and Recreation team hosted games and sport competitions.

"The event is one of the most important events we do on base because it brings us together, said Romanian Col. Razvan Bratulescu, base commander of 99th Military Base. “This event shows us we really do have a good level of cooperation with every institution in Olt County and that it is important to keep Partnership Day alive and do it every year."

Capt. Charlos Washington, commanding officer for NSF Deveselu, said that he sees the opportunity to celebrate Partnership Day as a privilege U.S. and Romania mission and agreement.

"It is a privilege to be here at Partnership Day, a day we get to celebrate with our proven partners Romanian 99th and the Olt County community year after year,” said Washington. “Partnership Day highlights the U.S. and Romania’s commitment to the shared NATO mission and it demonstrates that we have achieved and will continue achieve our mission. We enjoy working alongside our Romanian partners and we will continue to achieve our shared vision together.”

As the first Navy shore installation commissioned since Everett, Washington, in 1987, NSF Deveselu is located in south-central Romania aboard the Romanian 99th Military Base. Its mission is to provide installation facilities, resources, and services to support and enable AAMDS Romania’s operational abilities.

NSF Deveselu is the first Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Facility placed into operation, providing support to NATO's overall ballistic missile defense (BMD) system. NSF Deveselu’s service members and DOD employees serve as the security and logistic supply line for its primary tenant command, the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System. The Aegis command consists of a fire-control radar deckhouse and an associated Aegis command, control and communications suite, and housing launch modules that contain SM-3 defense missiles.
