RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (July 30, 2018) -- The U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Army Research Office recently conducted its annual anti-terrorism and force protection exercise.
The exercise was conducted in close coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, Durham County Sheriff's Office, Durham County Emergency Management and the Durham County Bomb Squad.
Before the exercise, ARO hosted experts from DHS and DCSO for a staff training brief on anti-terrorism, active shooter response, and facility security and safety.
The culminating events of the exercise involved a simulated explosion of a mail package bomb, evacuation of ARO's facility and simulated casualties.
All of this allowed for ARO to test and train its Medical Response Team, emergency procedures and mass notification tools.
Additionally, due to the scenario, the Durham County Bomb Squad simulated a response to the facility in order to address the possibly of a second explosive device being on site.
The bomb technicians utilized their specialized training and equipment to identify the simulated explosive device and confirm it to be inoperable.
The captain of the team from DCSO stated during the after action review, "I want to thank ARO for the opportunity you afford our team to train with you, and I also want to commend you for your preparedness and organization for dealing with potential threats and events."
