Celebrating the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps’ 243rd birthday, Soldiers and family members of the Regimental Support Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment and Charlie Battery, 2nd Battalion, 263rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard, took the time to honor the memory of those who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, July 28, 2018.

The group toured multiple battle sites in Belgium, starting at the Parker's Crossroads and Baraque de Fraiture, then moving to the defensive line for Malempre and Manhay. From there the traveled to Grandmenil to learn more about the attacks. They then toured some fox holes in Trou de Loup and also visited Bastogne and the Bastogne War Museum.

“This was a good event that gave us time to ask questions and receive information and personal anecdotes concerning the Battle of the Bulge," shared Capt. Christopher Hurd, intelligence officer, RSS, 2CR. "We received information about both the Blue Forces and Red Force perspectives, of Soldiers and events that took place during World War II.”

The following day, the group visited the American Cemetery near Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.

Laure Mathis, an American Battles Monument Commission staff member, provided a tour of the American Cemetery and a review of the Battle of the Bulge, noting that the American forces bore the brunt of the attack and suffered their highest casualties of any operation in the Western Front of the second World War.

The tour was wrapped up with a wreath-laying ceremony presided over by Chaplain (Capt.) Lito Amande, RSS, 2CR. The ceremony consisted of the playing of the National Anthem, an invocation, the playing of Taps after the laying of the wreath and finally the singing of the Army Song. After the ceremony, voluntary religious services - both a Catholic Sunday Mass and a General Protestant Service - were held.
