    Fort Jackson welcomes new CSM

FORT JACKSON, SOUTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES

    Story by Robert Timmons

    Fort Jackson Public Affairs Office

He is "ready to roll" in tackling a "once in a lifetime" assignment the installation's new post command sergeant major said during a ceremony July 20 at the Solomon Center.

My focus as command sergeant major is to continue to have the Army Training Center and Fort Jackson to be the symbol of excellence" in Basic Combat Training, said Command Sgt. Maj. Jerimiah Gan after assuming responsibility for the fort from Command Sgt. Maj. Lamont Christian during the ceremony.

Brig. Gen. Milford "Beags" Beagle Jr., Fort Jackson and ATC commander, welcomed Gan to the command while recognizing his leadership abilities.

Beagle said Gan's list of "accolades" were "impressive."

Gan, who previously was the senior enlisted leader of the 1st Engineer Brigade, joined in the Army in 1997 as a combat engineer. His first leadership role was as a team leader and then squad leader for the 5th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

He became a drill sergeant with the 35th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood before moving to Fort Benning, Georgia in 2006 to serve as a platoon sergeant in Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. In 2007, Gan served as the company's first sergeant while the unit deployed to Iraq's Diwaniyah Province and during the unit's second to Najaf, Iraq as part of one of the first Advise and Assist Brigades. He was also the chief instructor of the Army Sapper Leader Course and command sergeant major of the 101st Airborne Division's 326th Brigade Engineer Battalion.

The father of four has multiple deployments and has earned both sapper and ranger tabs.

Gan's role of Fort Jackson will be similar to a chief operating officer. He will carry out polices and standards and advise the commanding general on performance, training, appearance and conduct of enlisted Soldiers. He will also assess morale of the force and assist during critical events.

Christian passed the "torch" of the post to Gan "literally and figuratively" during the ceremony.

"Everything remains in good hands," Christian said. Christian will be moving on to a new phase of his Army career as he becomes a Soldier for Life.

Beagle called Christian a "Soldier's Soldier and leader's leader" noting he will be affecting "the installation for years to come."

Unlike Christian who has had multiple tours at Fort Jackson, Gan is coming to the installation fresh.

"I've never been stationed here before," Gan said, "it's all new to me. I'm very excited to get out and see Columbia."
