Misawa, Japan – Naval Air Facility Misawa (NAFM) Security personnel and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), 4th Surface-to-Ship Missile Regiment, completed a security training exercise on July 17 in Misawa, Japan.

The exercise teamed NAFM Security with JGSDF members to practice a variety of scenarios such as cover and contact sentry techniques, vehicle inspections, and vehicle turn-around procedures. Each scenario included a “suspicious person” roleplayed by a NAFM Sailor who would ultimately be intercepted by a JGSDF members. NAFM Security ensured several unique environmental situations were utilized, such as roadblocks and entry control points, to illustrate a realistic training environment.

“The purpose of the exercises was to ensure the cohesion and effectiveness between the two forces during Guard and Protect operations that combine American and JGSDF forces to protect our assets,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class Thomas Yokoi, the NAFM Physical Security Supervisor and training instructor.

Teams practiced each procedure multiple times to allow every member of the JGSDF Regiment to have hands on participation and be able to observe scenarios from various angles.

“Interacting with JGSDF is always exciting,” said Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Andy Chazarreta, a patrolman and participant in the exercise. “You get to interact with these guys who have a similar military mentality and still find a common ground between differing cultures to get the training done.”

With only a handful of translators to share, providing guidance on complicated techniques between the American and Japanese teams, the training isn’t always fluid. However this doesn’t stop our fighting forces from persevering and accomplishing the objective.

“The trainers and translators did a fantastic job,” said Chazarreta. “Actually breaking down these in-depth procedures into pieces gives JGSDF the best possible training NAFM has to offer in the long run. I’m pretty eager to train alongside these guys again.”
