USS Gunston Hall Conducts Port Visit as part of Southern Seas 2018 Deployment

CARRIBEAN SEA (NNS) – The Whidbey Island-Class Dock Landing Ship USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) anchored off the coast of Roatan, Honduras for a brief liberty port, July 21.

During their stay, Sailors will participate in a community relations project at Abundant Life Foundation as a means to build relationships and mutual understanding with the local community.

“We’ve been on deployment for a little over a month now, and while this stop gives the crew much anticipated time for rest, it also provides us with a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture of our partners,” said the ship’s Chaplain Lt. Nathan Rice. “We have the chance to leave an encouraging impression through our work in revitalization projects on the island, and also learn from the long and rich history of the people here.”

According to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40 Commodore Capt. Brian Diebold, the ship’s current deployment focuses on strengthening existing regional partnerships and fostering positive relationships through the exchange of maritime mission-focused knowledge and expertise.
“Our visit continues U.S. 4th Fleet’s efforts to strengthen relationships with our partners in the region,” said Capt. Brian Diebold, commodore, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40. “The opportunity to make a positive impact on the local community gives the U.S. a chance to build upon the success of past missions.”

Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet-conducted deployment focused on subject matter expert exchanges with partner nation militaries and security forces in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
The exercise is scheduled to run from June to September 2018, and encompasses several countries throughout the region including Colombia, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
