Soldiers with the 38th Infantry Division rolled along the dusty trails of Camp Atterbury during their annual training in July.

The Guardsmen could thank the fuelers who provided the thirsty generators, trucks and Humvees the diesel they needed.

“As long as they don’t have any fuel, and they need fuel, we supply it,” said Pfc. Hunter Brink, of Indianapolis and a petroleum supply specialist with the division.

The 38th soldiers trained in the fields of the southern Indiana post to become more proficient in battlefield management to include analyzing, communicating, commanding, coordinating, resourcing and synchronizing.

The fuelers, though, managed a mobile gas station of sorts with a truck that holds 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel.

Brink and Pfc. Kyle Perry, from Avon and a supply specialist with the division, provided the full service courtesy of filling gas cans, and the truck and Humvee tanks for their fellow Guardsmen.

No pay at the pump at the 38th ID gas station. All the Guardsmen, or customers in this case, had to do was sign for the petrol they received.

“They’re working hard out here,” said Brink of the soldiers practicing their battlefield management skills during a command post exercise. “So it’s the least we could do.”

The fuelers worked hard too, manning the only gas station for the division from 7:30 in the morning to 7:30 at night.

“They’ve performed outstandingly well throughout annual training, and we are very satisfied with their performance,” said Staff Sgt. Neal Weliever, the senior mechanic with the division’s headquarters battalion, who also supervised the fuelers' mission to provide diesel for the battalion with only two soldiers. “They are doing a heck of a job out there.”

In the end, the fuelers kept the 38th ID rolling along and in the fight.
