Each advancement cycle, Sailors throughout the fleet are promoted to the next pay grade based on their score during the Navy-wide advancement exam and their performance of duties. Many who study hard and perform their duties well are not selected, due to the competitive nature of the advancement exam, which can be a disheartening experience. However, for Sailors who have demonstrated superior performance and abilities in their rate, there is still a chance to promote. This is made possible by the Meritorious Advancement Program.

For Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) the annual MAP results were announced July 13, where 81 Sailors were informed they were selected to advance to the next pay grade during an all hands call.

Each department submits the names of Sailors who they feel are worthy of being meritoriously advanced. The department leading chief petty officers all meet together and using a grade sheet, evaluate which submissions have the strongest package. After numerous rounds of deliberation, the final list is drafted and sent to the commanding officer for approval. The selectees are further vetted to ensure there’s no pending legal or administrative actions, can meet physical standards and are screened for rating restrictions. Then the commanding officer is able to inform the crew who was selected.

Being selected for MAP is a big deal for a junior Sailor, and it reinforces the trust and confidence their chain of command has in them.

“Being meritoriously advanced is exciting. I’m very grateful for my chain of command having the faith in me to submit my name,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Autumn Lowe, from Bloomsburg, Penn., who was meritoriously advanced from 3rd class petty officer to 2nd class petty officer.

This year marks the second time she has been meritoriously advanced, and she is thankful that the program allows hard work and dedication to be positively rewarded.

“It recognizes that Sailors are capable of excelling in their rate regardless of what a test score says,” said Lowe. “Action is what makes a good Sailor.”

MAP is also a chance for senior leadership to make their mark on their junior Sailors careers.

“It’s a great program and a good opportunity to advance deserving Sailors. I think it’s excellent,” said Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Jacob Gardner, Nimitz air department leading chief petty officer from Waterloo, Iowa.

“There’s no better feeling than seeing Sailors advance. You could be having a bad day, but seeing your Sailors make rank could carry you for a month. I’m so happy to see that all the hard work they’ve put in is being recognized at the command level.”

Advancing to the next pay grade is one of the most important events in a Sailor’s career. More money, more responsibilities, and doors being opened for expansive jobs and career options are just a few of the motivating factors to advance. For those Sailors who didn’t make rank from the exam or MAP, the selection of their peers and shipmates should be motivation to continue studying and working hard.
