FORT HOOD, Texas—Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center celebrated national African American History Month with a ceremony at the hospital Feb. 23 to honor the heroic role African Americans played throughout all of the nation’s battles.
This year’s theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” and signed Presidential Proclamation brings awareness to all the African Americans who bravely fought and died in the name of freedom.— putting service before self, despite racial prejudice, unequal treatment, diminished opportunities, and segregation.
Guest speaker Carlyle Walton, president and CEO of Metroplex Health System, took the audience on a journey of reflection on poignant moments in history he felt portrayed the patriotic spirit of all Americans.
“I’m proud to be part of this memorable celebration. Today and every day we can be thankful that we live in a nation where freedom rings because of the sacrifices made and the insatiable quest and desire for freedom,” he said. “May the lives and legacy of the known and unknown African Americans who have served and continue to serve our great nation, ignite a fire within us to live ‘with liberty and justice for all.’”
The event also included special performances by “In Him We Move” Mime Ministry and the Garden of Gethsemane Youth and a buffet of some typical ethnic food dishes.
