    403rd Wing

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- The 403rd Wing adopted new vision and mission statements Jan. 29, 2018.

The new vision statement is, “Wing of choice: Airmen first, mission always,” while the new mission statement for the 403rd Wing is, “Develop exceptional Airmen ready to respond to every challenge every time.”

Col. Robert J. Stanton, 403rd Wing vice commander, noted the importance of having both a vision and a mission statement, explaining that their purpose is to focus 403rd’s Reserve Citizen Airmen on the training they perform in support of the wing’s mission and directing their energy toward fulfilling the requirements of the Air Force Reserve Command and the mission of the Air Force as a whole.

Stanton also mentioned the main differences between the vision and the mission statements.

“The mission is more focused on the immediate, whereas the vision looks not only at where we are now but where we want to be a year from now, five years from now, and on into the future – where we are taking this, where we are leading these people and these assets so that we can provide the best value to the taxpayers, to our leaders in the headquarters and to the combatant commanders in theater,” said Stanton.

Chief Master Sgt. Monte Snyder, 403rd Maintenance Group maintenance operations superintendent, and Kevin Waterhouse, 403rd Wing command section secretary, both contributed to coming up with the phrasing for the new statements. Waterhouse noted that the key considerations in formulating these statements were clarity, brevity and appropriateness.

“We looked at all of the concepts that are generally accepted and are a part of the (wing’s) focus that already exist, and then tried to find a new way to express that,” said Waterhouse. “One of the goals we had in place was to come up with something that was visceral; something that when you hear it, you can say, ‘Yeah! I can be a part of that, I like that, I can run with that, and I believe in that.”

Snyder mentioned that some of the inspiration for the new statements came from a Strategic Alignment event he attended here Sept. 6-8, 2017, that covered various leadership topics.

“It’s to get everybody moving in the same direction with one cause and one purpose,” said Snyder. “(The mission statement) fits in with the bigger direction of what the wing is trying to do as a whole and leveraging our resources to meet those goals.”

In regards to the vision statement, he said, “It’s about taking care of your people so you can make sure you’re able to respond to whatever comes along; taking care of your people as you accomplish the mission.”

Col. Jennie R. Johnson, 403rd Wing commander, echoed Waterhouse’s sentiment, summing up her overall purpose in adopting these new mission and vision statements.

"My goal with these statements is to provide a clear and concise reason for why we are here and where we are going as a wing," said Johnson. "It is my hope that these statements will not only serve as a reminder of the mission and vision we have, but as a unifying charge for what each and every Airman does for this wing, and for their country as a whole."
