ZAGAN, Poland – The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division’s motto “First Team” was evident at the Horsemen Flight Landing Strip in Zagan, Poland, June 29, 2018.

The Soldiers of the Horsemen platoon; Delta Company, 91st Brigade Engineer Battalion; 1st ABCT, 1st CD completed the inaugural flight of a Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System, specifically the RQ-7B Shadow, in Poland.

“Flying here (in Poland) is invaluable for us,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Austin Collell (from Anaheim, California) the Four Horsemen Platoon Leader. It prepares us for the next type of warfare. It allows us to fly in the wood line on a makeshift landing strip.

Operating a UAS in a field environment isn’t the normal operating procedure. Typically, units operate these aircraft from a pristine land strip, similar to a glass surface, with barracks and other solid structures around them. The Horsemen platoon took their operations back to the field.

“All the (preparation) work we’ve completed thus far has been beneficial and made us absolutely successful in every way thus far for this flight,” said U.S. Army Cpl. MacKenzie Salas, the Horsemen platoon mission coordinator.

The success of the Horsemen’s flight was possible by the dedication of the platoon’s Soldiers and Ironhorse brigade’s leadership supporting their mission.

“(I have) intelligent Soldiers! All my Soldiers are aviators and perform at a level above (their rank),” said Collell. “My Soldiers are very, very mature!
