    Ike Holds Pride Month Celebration

    PORTSMOUTH, VA, UNITED STATES

    06.29.2018

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Cyrus Roson

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)

The celebration gave Sailors a chance to show their support for LGBT Pride Month, learn about G.L.A.S.S. and commemorate the progress made towards equality while highlighting the importance of diversity in the U.S. military.
“The celebration is a good reflection for people who support the community,” said Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Dalaney Johnson, a member of G.L.A.S.S aboard Ike.
The event was the 5th annual celebration of LGBT Pride Month aboard the ship, and included personal testimonials, a cake-cutting and a video presentation. Lt. Cmdr. Larkin Magel, the ship’s psychologist, shared a story about the challenges faced by Air Force Technical Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, the first openly gay service member.
“The video shown speaks volumes, but it only shows half of what was happening in the late 1950s and early 1960s. At the same time, not only was the LGBT community fighting for equality, but African Americans were also making a stand for equal rights,” said Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Kristopher Cannon, president of G.L.A.S.S. aboard Ike.
“I think that the celebration was beautifully put together and helped spread information about LGBT, their history and promote acceptance and inclusion especially to those who are not part of the LGBT community,” said Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Danielle Catena, who attended the event.
LGBT observances are held around the country starting in June in remembrance of the 1969 Stonewall Riots. The Stonewall Riots were a series of raids on multiple gay establishments by New York City police, resulting in the modern movement for equality and to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans.
The Department of Defense recognizes LGBT service members and civilians each June for their dedicated service to both the DOD mission and to our nation. Pride Month is an occasion that brings the LGBT community together with their family, friends and allies to take pride in themselves and their many achievements.
