Rear Adm. Carl A. Lahti relieved Rear Adm. Charles W. Rock as commandant during a change of command ceremony held at the Washington Navy Yard June 28.
Rock, a native of s a native of Upstate New York, became the 90th commandant of NDW, the oldest continuously operated Navy installation in the country, and the Joint Forces Headquarters National Capital Region deputy commander in July of 2016. In his time as commandant of NDW, Rock lead a workforce of more than 3,500 military and civilian personnel at six Navy and joint installations. Additionally, he hosted the Naval Attaché Corps and personally oversaw all ceremonies featuring foreign dignitaries at the Washington Navy Yard, known as the "quarterdeck of the Navy," on behalf of the chief of naval operations.
During the ceremony, Rock thanked those he has worked with throughout his career, and reflected on his time at NDW.
"It’s been a tremendous honor to serve with you for the past wo years,” said Rock. “I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you. No other region in my humble opinion has such a diverse portfolio than what you do…I will simply say that what you do every single day is remarkable.”
Vice Adm. Mary Jackson, commander, Navy Installations Command, presented Rock with the Legion of Merit for his able and dedicated leadership of NDW from July 2016 to June 2018.
Prior to coming to NDW, Lahti served as Director, Energy and Environmental Readiness Division, OPNAV N45. He commanded USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) (GOLD) and was also 50th commanding officer of Naval Submarine Base New London, and the chief of staff at Navy Installations Command.
"I want to deliver support to the fleet, fighter, and family that both enhances the lethality of the Navy and contributes to building the Navy the nation needs, said Lahti.” “We do this by being experts on what we do ashore, making smart business decisions, and above all by delivering unparalleled customer service fully responsive to the needs of those who visit our installations.”
NDW encompasses more than 4,000 square miles, including the District of Columbia, the Maryland counties of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, and St. Mary's, and northern Virginia counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford King George, Westmoreland, Arlington and the cities within their outer boundaries. The region includes such installations as Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, and The Washington Navy Yard.
