WHIDBEY ISLAND (NNS) – Cmdr. Brian Harding relieved Cmdr. Tim McGeehan as commanding officer of Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Whidbey Island, during a change of command ceremony held at the Skywarrior Theater on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI), June 21.
Harding, who recently attended the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base and completed a joint tour at National Security Agency Washington, takes command of NIOC Whidbey Island from McGeehan, who will report to the Pentagon Office of the Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare next month.
Capt. Geoffrey Moore, NASWI commanding officer, was the ceremony’s guest speaker and presiding officer. He commended McGeehan’s leadership and successful command tour.
“From my position as base commander, I look at NIOC Whidbey Island as one of our most effective commands, where teamwork, innovation, and sharing of ideas are not just concepts, but they are put into action every day, both in our operational world as well as in our team Whidbey Island community. Tim, with support of his triad, has developed a command culture that enables every single Sailor onboard to have the opportunity to thrive professionally.”
While serving as NIOC Whidbey Island’s commanding officer, McGeehan led more than 130 military and civilian staff members, and was awarded the 2016 and 2017 Association of Old Crows Outstanding Unit Award and Retention Excellence Awards. In his remarks, he thanked the crew for the opportunity to serve as commanding officer.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as commanding officer of NIOC Whidbey Island. Our Sailors execute uniquely technical and demanding missions. They perform critical functions with a global mandate and they are always raising the bar to stay the best. They are our asymmetric advantage. I urge my fellow Information Warfare Community officers to pursue similar cross detailing opportunities; the chance to gain new insight from seeing the mission with a new set of eyes, the satisfaction of contributing in a new way, and the opportunity to work with Sailors like these is too good to pass up.”
Harding provided his vision of what is in store during his upcoming tenure at NIOC Whidbey Island.
“Being assigned here as commanding officer is a dream come true for me,” said Harding. “I look forward to leading this team. Together, we will remain focused on what is important. The mission, our Sailors, and our families. Your dedication and selfless service do not go unnoticed. I look forward to serving alongside each and every one of you.”
NIOC Whidbey Island executes analysis, certification, planning, and direct support augmentation to naval air and surface forces engaged in operations worldwide as a subordinate to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F).
Since its establishment, FCC/C10F has grown into an operational force composed of more than 15,000 Active and Reserve Sailors and civilians organized into 26 active commands, 40 Cyber Mission Force units, and 26 reserve commands around the globe. C10F, the operational arm of FCC, executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides support of Navy and joint missions in cyber/networks, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
