    48th Fighter Wing

Airmen from the 48th Fighter Wing united in effort to commemorate the sacrifices of law enforcement personnel in observance of National Police Week May 14 to 18 at RAF Lakenheath, England.

It has been approximately 50 years since President John F. Kennedy declared the calendar week of May 15 as National Police Week. Since then, community members have continued to pay tribute to peace officers who have been injured, disabled or have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Liberty Wing personnel had the opportunity to join the 48th Security Forces Squadron defenders in recognition of Police Week and in honoring their fallen brethren by participating in events such as a combat arms competition, 24-hour walking vigil and Defenders Challenge.

The various events hosted were two-fold in that they gave participants an opportunity to show their support and underlined existing comradery.

“Police Week also highlights the importance of community involvement,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Winn, section chief of training assigned to the 48th SFS.

To get the Liberty Wing involved, 48th SFS members hosted a demonstration event with representatives from different sections within the unit. The sections provided a glimpse into the mission and varying roles of those who protect and serve.

“Security forces always wants to strengthen community ties,” said Winn. “Police Week allows us to get out and speak to community members.”

Events hosted throughout the week highlighted the capabilities of law enforcement personnel and honored fallen defenders.

Police Week solidifies defenders’ commitment to the mission and comrades.
