GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – Leadership Personnel from the 156th Airlift Wing participated in its 2nd Annual Command Development Workshop held at Fort Buchanan’s Training Building June 18 and 19.
The workshop provides commissioned and senior noncommissioned officers with the means to fill key leadership roles and the tools to make crucial decisions when the need arises.
Maj. Frances M. Romero, 156th AW Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, planned, organized and moderated the event for the Puerto Rico Air National Guard Officers and SNCO`s who are filling management positions.
“My objective is to provide an educational environment led by current PRANG leaders who can provide the essential elements needed to meet management and mentorship roles,” said Romero. “Our current and future leaders should be afforded an instructive forum to assist in each of their leadership stages.”
Staff Sgt. Angel Oquendo,156th AW Public Affairs NCOIC, delivered a PA Operational Security briefing and moderated an interactive exercise for the PRANG leaders on how to prepare for interviews with the media.
“As leaders in today’s Air Force, at some point you will engage with the media.” said Oquendo. “It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Let’s continue preparing ourselves for when those opportunities occur to tell the PRANG story.” He presented video footage of past interviews with military personnel and discussed tips on the preparation process, including answers, command messages, effective responses and the importance of practicing.
Chief Master Sgt. Orlando Soto, 156th AW Human Resource Advisor, provided the PRANG leadership with guidelines, tools and mentorship advice in the areas of finance, education and benefits that also facilitate and encourage successful military careers for our upcoming Airmen.
“Airmen of all ranks should be mentored and guided throughout their military careers.” said Soto. “Enhancing the knowledge of our Airmen is essential for the future of the PRANG.”
Col. Raymond Figueroa, Commander of the 156th AW, provided insight on the Air Force Promotion Selection Boards for commissioned and noncommissioned officers.
“We must insure that our Airmen have their career progression packages up to date including evaluation reports, awards, Professional Military Education and any additional records demonstrating distinctive service.” said Figueroa.
“As their leaders, we must ensure that our Airmen are accurately documented and prepared to compete in promotional boards."
Maj. Romero closed out the two day workshop by acknowledging all the PRANG leaders for their attendance and insight on military professional development.
