48th Fighter Wing Airmen spoke to members of a local Girlguiding unit in Mildenhall, England, Feb. 20.

The event marks the first time the Girl Guide unit has worked with members from RAF Lakenheath in a community outreach event.

The mentoring event, called “Inspiring Leaders,” was a chance for the 2nd Mildenhall Guides to meet and interview inspirational women from RAF Lakenheath about their individual stories and experiences in hopes to broaden the girls’ future career aspirations.

Girlguiding is a sister organization of the Girl Scouts of America. Similar to the Girls Scouts of America, they develop the skills and confidence needed to reach their potential as students, colleagues and citizens and work to become the young women they want to be. The Guides are made up of four sections according to age: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers.

At the event, Girl Guide unit members interviewed female officers from varying career fields; including the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron, 48th Dental Squadron and the 48th Comptroller Squadron.

Each member of the unit had the opportunity to spend a few minutes interviewing each officer in a speed-mentoring style session.

“In the media and the world it’s portrayed that being in the military is still primarily a man’s job,” said the 493rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron assistant officer in charge. “Being here as all females with the Girl Guides was just an opportunity to show them that the world is theirs.”

The officers brought props related to their career fields as visual aids to help describe their jobs.

“The aspirations of the girls are very stereotypically female-oriented,” said Abigail Gilby, Guider in charge of the 2nd Mildenhall Guides. “There is so much more available to them, and they are capable of more than they realize. To see these people actually doing these types of jobs serves as an inspiration to them.”

The 2nd Mildenhall Guides hope to work with RAF Lakenheath and more of their women warriors in future community outreach events.
